Philos Health is a nonprofit corporation formed in August 2004 to improve the health and well-being of people living in rural and under-served areas of the Philippines. Our founders are a group of health care providers and supportive community members in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Our initial focus is the rural Filipino town of Jagna, where many people live in isolated, mountainous surrounding areas. Jagna, in the central Visayan region of Bohol province, was chosen because:
1. Many of its 32,000 residents lack access to health care.
2. Its municipal government and local NGOs are committed to a formal, ongoing health improvement partnership and the ongoing investment of local resources.
Our work to date includes:
- Organized visits by American nurses, doctors and other health care professionals who provide:
o On-site care, assistive devices (e.g., prostheses, hearing aids, blood glucose meters), and education to community residents.
o Training of local health care staff on follow-up needs and equipment/assistive device use.
- Regular shipments of Medical Supplies, Equipment, and Medicine for use by local health care providers.
- Construction of a Rural Health Care Clinic and Birthing Center.
- Purchasing and outfitting of a Mobile Medical Van bringing primary health care to the most remote mountain villages.
- Development of a Community Radio Station with a health promotion focus.
- Employment of a local Nurse/Health Educator.
- Payment for Specialized Surgery and Treatment at out-of-area hospitals.
