Founder

Forrest Malakoff
Forrest Malakoff is the founder of Philos Health. He retired after 23 years as a Vice President of Mills Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame, CA. He has been on 60+ trips to the Philippines. He holds an undergraduate degree from Temple University and a graduate degree from Washington University in St Louis.

Chairperson

Tania Nanevicz
Tania Nanevicz is the Chairperson of the Philos Board. She is a practicing Cardiologist and is currently the Chair of the Cardiology Division for the Palo Alto Medical Foundation at the Mills Peninsula Location. Her educational background includes Stanford University, Dartmouth-Brown Medical School, Mt Sinai Hospital Medical Residency, and UCSF Cardiology. She has been on 4 trips to the Philippines as a volunteer for Philos along with her 3 children who take part in the dental program.

Board Member

Christina Bryant

Christina Bryant is a member of the Philos Health Board. She has practiced in the Department of Women’s Health at Kaiser for over 20 years. Her educational background includes UCLA, UCSD School of Medicine and Harbor-UCLA OBGYN residency. She was excited to join her first Philos trip this summer along with her husband Jason (also on the board) and daughter.

Board Member

Susan Swetter is a member of the Philos Health Board. She has been practicing Dermatology for over 30 years and is the Co-Director of the Melanoma and Cutaneous Oncology Programs at Stanford Medicine and Cancer Institute. Her educational background includes the University of Virginia, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, UCSF Medicine internship, and Stanford Dermatology residency. She has been on 5 volunteer trips to Bohol for Philos Health since 2014, along with her family (Board member Dan Guenin and 2 daughters), who are also in the medical field.

Board Member

Lorraine Massa

Lorraine Massa has been a member of the Philos Board since 2015. She practiced Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center for 36 years, and retired in 2024. She served as MPMC’s first female Chief of Staff, and as Chair of MPMC’s Credentials Committee for 13 years. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and her MD at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Pulmonary Disease, both at UCSF. She has been on 3 memorable trips to Jagna with Philos, accompanied by her son, Nick. She lives in Burlingame with her husband, Steve

Board Member

Dan Guenin is a member of the Philos Health Board. He is a retired Emergency Medicine physician after spending 26 years at Mills-Peninsula Hospital. He continues as a physician on USAR TF-3 and as an instructor in wilderness medicine. His educational background includes the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine with an EM residency and hyperbaric medicine fellowship at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He has been on 5 trips to the Philippines with his wife, Susan Swetter (also on the Board), and their 2 daughters. His favorite color is plaid and favorite TV show is Zoboomafoo. He wears a size 42L and way prefers donuts over Brussels sprouts. Favorite cocktail is a Paper Plane and he likes to drink maple syrup straight from the bottle.​​​

Board Member

John Rosenberg

John Rosenberg has been a Philos board member for over fifteen years and has made over twenty trips to Jagna. He is a retired ER physician after thirty three years at Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City.  He is an alumnus of the Episcopal Academy, Princeton University, Hahnemann Medical College (now Drexel), and completed post graduate work at California Pacific Medical Center (Now PMC) in San Francisco. He and his wife Lynne have lived in La Honda for over fifty years, and have been blessed with three grown children and six grandchildren with another on the way. He has worked abroad in Nepal, Tibet and India as well as the Philippines delivering care in remote and underserved locations, more than forty trips. He is passionate about baseball, having pitched for over fifty years, and still lives and dies with the Phillies. Like Dr. Guenin, he also drinks maple syrup from the bottle.

Board Member

Amy Jasmer

Amy Jasmer is a member of the Philos Health Board. A fundraising and civic leader, she has a 30-year career in consumer products marketing and communications.  She served as President of the Hillsborough Schools Foundation (2021–2023), founding editor of Hillsborough Living Magazine, and currently serves on the Town of Hillsborough Citizens Communication Advisory Committee. Professionally, she was Public Relations Director of the Americas at Levi Strauss & Co., leading award-winning brand integration with media and celebrity partnerships. She attended the Boston Conservatory of Music and graduated from the University of Massachusetts. In 2024, Amy joined her husband—an Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease specialist—and their three children on their first service trip to Bohol.​​​​​

Board Member

Roberta Jurash

Roberta Jurash is a new member of the Philos Board. She is a dentist who specializes in Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine and serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Roberta earned her dental degree from UCSF, a master’s in Orofacial Pain from the University of Southern California, and a master’s in Physical Therapy from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. In the summer of 2024, Roberta traveled to the Philippines with her teenage daughter—a meaningful experience that inspired her to become part of the Philos Board. She is honored to support Philos’ mission and is dedicated to helping bring compassionate care and lasting impact to communities across the Philippines.​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Secretary

Charles Willits is the Secretary of the Philos Health Board. He has returned yearly to the Philippines since his first trip in 2022, and stays involved year-round with the organization with roles including outreach, trip coordination, and fundraising. Charles works in real estate investment and analysis, focusing on property acquisition and development across several U.S. markets. He holds a degree in Chemistry from UC Santa Barbara, which admittedly seems unrelated to anything he’s doing today but hey, maybe he will use it down the line.

Board Member

Lefkos Aftonomos participated in the first Philos Health medical mission to Jagna in 2004 and in numerous subsequent trips and is one of the original members of the Philos Health Board. He holds undergraduate degrees from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, MD degree from the University of Nebraska  and completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency and MS degrees at the University of Washington in Seattle. He retired after 40 years acting as associate medical director and medical director for Rehabilitation Services at Mills-Peninsula hospitals and is currently residing in San Francisco.

Board Member

Jason Bryant has been practicing emergency medicine for over 20 years and a member of Mills-Peninsula Emergency Medicine Associates for over a decade. He met his wife Christina in medical school at UC San Diego, and they both completed their residency at Harbor-UCLA in Torrance.  After being Philos-curious for many years, they recently completed their first trip to Bohol with their daughter Talia this past June 2025. Jason is planning to return this spring and hopefully many more trips in the future. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

Board Member

Chris White

Chris White is an Emergency Physician and member of the Philos Health Board of Directors. He has completed 6 missions to the Philippines since joining them in 2009 and one of his daughters has joined the missions on 2 occasions assisting with the dental and nutrition programs. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley, attended UCSF medical school and completed his internship and residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, gaining a specialized knowledge of prehospital medical Care. Chris has served as Medical Director for American Medical Response in San Mateo County, implemented a Tactical Emergency Medicine support team with Campbell Police Department in Santa Clara County and served as their SWAT physician for nearly a decade providing medical care in unsecured, austere environments. Chris (semi) retired in 2024 after 37 years at Mills Peninsula Hospital to spend more time pursuing his other passions including photography, skiing, backpacking, scuba diving. Currently Chris continues to work part time as an ER physician and is serving as shipboard physician for National Geographic/Lindblad expeditions. He is married to Jennifer Scopazzi, and is a proud dad with 2 daughters, 2 stepdaughters, 2 grandkids and 2 cattle dogs.
